Heather’s Story
Don’t Wait to Start Living Again: Heather’s Journey Back from ANCA Vasculitis
Returning to work and a normal routine after a major health crisis can feel like an overwhelming mountain to climb. No one understands this better than Heather.
In 2025, she suddenly lost her hearing after a series of ear infections. She then developed a Bell's palsy, which paralysed half of her face. This all led to a new diagnosis of ANCA Vasculitis, a rare autoimmune disease, which left Heather hospitalised for months. Not only did she lose her hearing, but she also battled significant pain, disabling nosebleeds, and profound fatigue. All of these resulted in life-changing impairments. In the wake of such a devastating illness, the road back to health seemed nearly impossible.
But Heather’s story isn't just about survival; it's about reclaiming her life again.
She didn't do it alone. Through a carefully paced rehabilitation programme with Vitality360, tailored vocational rehabilitation, strategic workplace adjustments, and employer support from her Group Income Protection provider Legal and General, Heather was able to return to full-time work. Along the way, she faced the deeply personal challenge of grieving for her old self, learning to accept a "new normal," and intentionally building a new version of life going forward.
One of the most powerful insights Heather shares is her approach to returning to work. Instead of waiting until she felt completely "better," she began a graded return to work alongside her rehabilitation programme. She proves that work doesn't have to wait; it can actually be a vital part of getting better. She says that getting back to work was the best thing she ever did.
We know you'll agree that Heather is an extraordinary person whose journey deeply impacted our team during a recent video recording.
